Bob Baughman from the City of Jacksonville's Parks department just sent me this.

"During the major electrical outage we experienced last May the fountain
took a major power surge that blew out over 40 of the fountain lights
and lenses. We have issued a purchase order for the repair to the
damaged items and expect the repairs to be completed within the next two
weeks. Sorry for any inconvenience that our customers may have
experienced during this repair."

I lived in Jax in the '60s and '70s and loved the fountain. My family moved from Jax. to El Paso, Tx. in '74. My sister had told me there was a web page for the fountain, so I checked it out. Hearing the fountain brought back so many memories.

Late breaking news!

I was infomed a few hours ago that a last minute glitch in the operation of the Refurbished Fountain will delay tomorrow's Reopening ceremony.

As soon as I hear more information I will post here.

I am sorry I had already updated the main page of the
web site however I failed to post anything here.

Bob Baughman from The City Parks department has informed me
that there will be a Grand reopening and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony
on Wednesday 17 October, 2001 at 10:30 Am.

I would expect that after that the Fountain will back to it's normal
schedule.

Hope to see some of you at the ceremony :)

Is the fountain ever going to be reopened? Every time I check on the website it has been delayed. I have changed my weekend plans several times thinking this will be when I get to see this fountain. Can anyone email me to let me know when the fountain is going to be opened. Then I will have to plan a weekend trip to see it.

I remember going to the fountain in the early 70's as a child when we would come down from South Carolina to visit my grandparents. We would watch the fireworks and listen to music. It was so beautiful.

Hi Mary,

The Times Union did, finally, run an article in the Community Section of the
paper on Mar 28, 2001.
It may be viewed here:
Times Union - March 28, 2001 - Fountain goes dry for repairs
Thanks to Dan Scanlon for a well written article.

Thanks to mclark@jacksonville.com for directing you to the web site.

I am really excited about the ongoing renovations, as the Fountain is,
without doubt, a Center Piece of Jacksonville.

Also, I am very excited about adding the upcoming addition to the web site with additional information regarding the
"JACKSONVILLE MARITIME MUSEUM SOCIETY".
Which should be included in the web site in the next week or so.

Thanks to all the visitors, and the supporters of "Friendship Fountain"

Thought I'd let you know that it has been four years since I discovered this beautiful fountain in Jacksonville. I was enjoying it, along with some co-workers after duty hours. We were on business from California. I seemed to be
the one most captivated by it's beauty. The water was so refreshing and invigorating. I just stood there, during May 1996, and stared at the profuse amount of water that came from this fountain. The blue lining made the water look like it was from a dream. It was as if it was on just for me. In the middle of my admiring it, it suddenly shut off. I was so disappointed that it did not continue; it was now around 5:00-6:00 p.m. We continued on towards the J Landing. We never came back to visit it. I took some pictures, but I did not develop them until months later. They just did not capture the feeling that you get when watching this fountain up close. I am putting together a scrapbook of the memories I had while I was employed by the department that sent me to Jacksonville. I hope it's okay if I use your pictures for my scrapbook; not to worry -they won't be used for anything else. I'm so glad that someone like you appreciates this fountain - enough to build a web page and get your city reinvolved in keeping it. Hope I get to visit Jacksonville again - and if I do, you know where I'll be stopping. I hope it stays on for me.
God Bless You - John 4: 13-14
